Why can’t I fully customize checkout on my Shopify plan and what are the limits?
Shopify does not allow full checkout customization on regular plans because checkout is a highly sensitive area that handles payments, personal data, and fraud protection. To keep stores secure and fast, Shopify only allows limited design changes on non-Plus plans.
Why Shopify Limits Checkout Customization
Checkout processes card payments, customer details, and order validation. Allowing free code editing here could cause security risks, failed payments, or legal compliance issues. For this reason, Shopify locks checkout structure on standard plans.
What You CAN Customize on Regular Shopify Plans
- Logo and header background
- Brand colors and buttons
- Fonts and typography
- Checkout background images
- One-page checkout layout
- Address auto-complete
- Buy-again button for repeat customers
What You CANNOT Customize Without Shopify Plus
- Add custom checkout fields (VAT, company name, GST, etc.)
- Change checkout steps or flow
- Add upsells inside checkout
- Insert banners, badges, or extra content blocks
- Modify thank-you or order status page layout
- Inject custom Liquid, CSS, or JavaScript into checkout
What Shopify Plus Unlocks
Shopify Plus gives you full access to Checkout Extensibility, which allows:
- Custom checkout fields
- Custom content blocks and banners
- Upsells and gift options
- Advanced order rules
- Full thank-you and order status page control
Short Summary
Regular Shopify plans only allow basic checkout branding. Full checkout layout control, custom fields, upsells, and advanced design are only available on Shopify Plus for security, performance, and compliance reasons.
