How do I submit my Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console?
Submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console helps Google discover, crawl, and index your Shopify store pages faster. Shopify automatically generates a sitemap, so you only need to verify your site and submit it.
What Is a Shopify Sitemap?
Shopify automatically creates a sitemap.xml file that includes links to your products, collections, pages, blog posts, and primary images.
Your sitemap is located at:
https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
The sitemap updates automatically whenever you add new products, pages, or content.
Before You Submit Your Sitemap
1. Remove Password Protection
Search engines cannot crawl password-protected stores. Make sure your store is publicly accessible before submission.
2. Create a Google Search Console Account
Sign in to your Google Search Console account to begin verification.
Step 1: Verify Your Shopify Store in Google Search Console
- Open Google Search Console.
- Click Add property.
- Select URL prefix.
- Enter your full domain (including https://).
- Choose HTML tag as the verification method.
- Copy the provided meta tag.
Add the Meta Tag in Shopify
- Go to Online Store > Themes.
- Click the three dots (…) next to your active theme.
- Select Edit code.
- Open theme.liquid under the Layout folder.
- Paste the meta tag below the opening
<head>tag. - Click Save.
- Return to Google Search Console and click Verify.
If verification fails, wait 10–15 minutes and try again.
Step 2: Submit Your Sitemap
- In Google Search Console, select your verified property.
- Click Sitemaps under the Indexing section.
- Enter
sitemap.xmlin the “Add a new sitemap” field. - Click Submit.
Google will now crawl and index your store pages.
If You Have Multiple Domains
- Verify each domain separately in Google Search Console.
- Submit
sitemap.xmlfor each domain. - Paste each verification meta tag on a new line inside
theme.liquid.
How to Check Indexing Status
Search in Google:
site:yourdomain.com
This shows which pages are indexed.
Important Notes
- Shopify automatically generates and updates your sitemap.
- No manual sitemap creation is required.
- Indexing can take a few days to a few weeks.
- Make sure your store is live and not password-protected.
