How do I set my Shopify domain as the primary URL and redirect all others?
Shopify allows you to choose one main (primary) domain that customers will always see in their browser. All other domains connected to your store automatically redirect to this primary domain, helping avoid SEO duplication and keeping your branding consistent.
What is a Primary Domain?
Your primary domain is the main web address that:
- Displays in customer browser address bars
- Appears in search engines
- Receives all redirected traffic from other domains
When you should change your primary domain
- You connected a new branded domain
- You want to stop showing myshopify.com to customers
- You are rebranding your business
Set your domain as Primary
- From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains
- Find the domain you want customers to use
- Click the domain
- Click Set as primary
- Confirm the change
Automatic Redirect Behavior
Once a primary domain is selected, Shopify automatically creates 301 redirects:
yourstore.myshopify.com→ your primary domain- Old custom domains → your primary domain
- www → non-www or vice versa (based on your setting)
Force HTTPS and Secure Browsing
Shopify also ensures that:
- All HTTP traffic redirects to HTTPS
- Your primary domain always loads securely
Verify redirection is working
- Open your old domain in a browser
- It should automatically redirect to your primary domain
- Check that the browser shows the 🔒 secure lock
