Shopify Payments is Shopify’s built-in payment system that lets you accept credit cards, debit cards, wallets, and local payment methods directly without third-party gateways. Before setting it up, your country must be supported and your account must have two-step authentication enabled for security.

Step 1: Check if Shopify Payments is available in your country

Shopify Payments is only available in selected countries and regions. To verify:

  • Log in to your Shopify admin.
  • Go to Settings → Payments.
  • If you see Shopify Payments listed, your country is supported.

Step 2: Enable two-step authentication

Two-step authentication is required for Shopify Payments. Without it, you cannot activate Shopify Payments.

  • Click your profile icon in the top-right corner of Shopify admin.
  • Select Your account
  • Click Security, scroll down to Two-step authentication.
  • Follow the prompts to add your phone number or use an authentication app (Google Authenticator, Authy, etc.) and verify the code.
  • Learn more and watch Shopify’s official guide: Two-step authentication video guide

Step 3: Activate Shopify Payments

  • Go to Settings → Payments in Shopify admin.
  • Click Activate Shopify Payments.
  • Enter your business details, including legal name, address, and tax information.
  • Add your bank account information where payouts will be deposited.

Step 4: Choose payment methods

Select which cards and wallets you want to accept, such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Shopify Payments will automatically handle supported payment methods for your country.

Step 5: Enable fraud prevention

Shopify Payments automatically runs enhanced fraud analysis to protect your store. For extra security, you can enable:

  • CVV verification: Ensures the customer has the physical card.
  • AVS (Address Verification System): Verifies billing address matches the card issuer.

To configure fraud settings: Settings → Payments → Manage → Reduce credit and debit card fraud.

Step 6: Set your customer billing name

This is the name that appears on your customers’ credit card statements. It should include your store or business name to avoid confusion or chargebacks.

  • Go to Settings → Payments → Manage → Customer billing statement.
  • Enter the Statement name (2–19 characters, Latin letters only).
  • Enter a valid phone number for customer support.
  • Click Save.

Step 7: Enable payout email notifications (optional)

Receive emails whenever Shopify sends a payout to your bank account.

  • Go to Settings → Payments → Manage → Payout schedule.
  • Turn on Get notified by email every time you receive a payout.
  • Click Save.

Step 8: Test your checkout

Place a test order using Shopify’s Bogus Gateway or test payment method to verify:

  • Payment processing
  • Payouts to your bank account
  • Taxes, fraud protection, and checkout experience

Step 9: Why Shopify Payments is recommended

  • No extra transaction fees for Shopify Payments users
  • Faster payouts directly to your bank account
  • Built-in fraud protection
  • Seamless integration with Shopify checkout and all sales channels
