Connecting PayPal, Stripe, or other payment gateways to Shopify lets your customers pay securely using their preferred method. Shopify provides built-in integration for PayPal Express Checkout, and other providers can be added as third-party gateways.

Step 1: Check existing PayPal account

Shopify automatically creates a PayPal Express Checkout account using the email address you used to sign up. If you already have a PayPal business account with that email, you can start receiving payments immediately. Otherwise, sign up for a PayPal business account with the same email.

Step 2: Complete PayPal setup in Shopify

  • Go to Settings → Payments in Shopify admin.
  • In Additional payment methods, click Setup incomplete next to PayPal.
  • Click Complete setup.
  • Enter your PayPal email and password, then follow the on-screen instructions to enter business details.
  • Review policy and permission statements, then click Agree and Create Account.
  • Complete the business information pages and click Go back to Shopify.

Step 3: Configure checkout language and address

  • Shopify automatically shares your checkout language with PayPal Express based on your store settings.
  • PayPal uses the shipping address as the billing address during checkout; customers can edit it if needed.
  • Note: Billing address may be missing if the customer chooses in-store pickup.

Step 4: Test your PayPal integration

  • Create a test product and place a purchase using a different PayPal account.
  • Ensure payments, refunds, and notifications work properly.

Step 5: Deactivate PayPal (if needed)

  • Go to Settings → Payments.
  • In Additional payment methods, click PayPal.
  • Click Deactivate to remove it. Your details are saved and you can reactivate later.

Note on Stripe and other gateways

For other payment providers like Stripe, you can set them up in Settings → Payments → Add payment method. Follow the on-screen instructions provided by the gateway to link your account. Most third-party gateways also allow testing and sandbox mode.

Benefits of using Shopify-supported payment gateways

  • Secure and trusted payment processing
  • Supports multiple currencies and wallets
  • Integrated directly with Shopify checkout
  • Easy to manage refunds and payouts
