How do I add product variants (size, color, material) in Shopify?
If you sell the same product in different sizes, colors, or materials, Shopify lets you create separate versions of that product. These versions are called product variants. Variants help your customers clearly choose what they want and help you manage prices, stock, and shipping properly.
What are product variants in Shopify?
A product variant is simply one version of your product. For example, a T-shirt can have multiple variants like:
- Small – Blue – Cotton
- Medium – Black – Polyester
- Large – White – Cotton
Even though it is one product, each combination is treated as a separate item in your Shopify store.
How to add size, color, or material variants in Shopify
Follow these simple steps:
- Login to your Shopify admin panel.
- Go to Products and open the product you want to edit.
- Scroll down to the Variants section.
- Click Add options like size or color.
- Enter your first option name, for example Size.
- Add values such as Small, Medium, and Large.
- Click Add another option to add Color or Material.
- Enter values like Black, White, Red or Cotton, Leather, etc.
- Click Save.

Shopify will automatically create all possible combinations for you.
Manage price, stock, and shipping for each variant
After variants are created, you can set a different:
- Price
- Stock quantity
- SKU and barcode
- Weight and shipping details
- Product image
This helps you sell limited stock items, premium colors, or special materials at different prices without creating separate products.
Why variants are important for online stores
Using variants makes your store look professional and improves customer experience. Customers can quickly find the exact size, color, or material they need, and your inventory stays organized.
If you are running a Shopify store for local or international customers, proper variant setup also helps improve product visibility in search results and keeps your stock system accurate.
